The Eco Parks Craze

By Jude Wallenberg at 05/05/08 06:40
The Philippines is a big archipelago that is rich natural resources. There are a wide array of organisms that can only be found in the country and nowhere else in the world. These includes both animals and plants.

However, in the dawn of the modern era, the number of these species are dwindling like as fast as a thunderbolt. To prevent the extinction, the government built sanctuaries and breeding stations in different parts of the country.

One of the many sanctuaries in the country is located in Caluit, Palawan. It is called Calauit Game Preserve & Wildlife Sanctuary, the Philippine version of African safaris. Here, the animals are free to roam anywhere in the vast land solely dedicated to taking care of them. The sanctuary was opened in the 1070's by the then president, Ferdinand Marcos.

Palawan is home to many rare floras and faunas. National Geographic named Palawan as the best island destination in East and Southeast Asia region in 2007. It is also named as the 13th best island in the world. And aside from the naturalbeauty of the island's landscape, tourists are attracted also because of the many zoos and widllife sanctuaries in the island. Palawan is home to 4 sanctuarias including the one in Calauit.

There are also big butterfly gardens, crocodile farms - where breeding is conducted for the salt water crocodiles which are already endangered and the crocodiles that can only be found in the Philippine rivers.

But all of these eco park craze thats being going on in the country do not only happens outside the metro and the capital region. In Metro Manila, there are world class zoo and oceanariums that aims to preserve and conserve and protect wildlifes. The Avilon Zoo and Botanical Garden in Marikina, The Manila Zoo Animal Haven, Manila Ocean Park, Eco Park Wildlife Reserve in Quezon City to name a few.
