
Perhaps one of the more famous attraction in the Philippines for tourists is the ever popular Chocolate Hills found in the island province of Bohol. The hills are all natural, shaped by nature thousands of years ago. There have been various theories as to how the hills were formed but to date, none have been proven.
Chocolate Hills is consists of 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills. The hills are also mysteriously about the same size each. The hills are covered with green grass for most of the year but turns brown during the dry season of March to mid June, hench the name.
The hills are Bohol's most famous tourist attraction. Actually, if you are visiting the Philippines, many will suggest your visit is not complete if you haven't seen Chocolate Hills. The area Chocolate Hills covered is almost a third of the whole island of Bohol, about 20 sq. miles or 50 kilometer square.
No other geological formation can be seen anywhere in the world except the one in Bohol. It is so unique that many geologist have resided to Bohol permanently to study and discover the real origin of the Chocolate Hills.
Bohol is just about 2 hours from mainland Cebu, the economic center of the Visayas region where the islands are located. This makes it an easy destination for tourist who wants to witness the majestic formation of nature. Docking on the port of Bohol, it will take you about 30 minutes to an hour to reach the first part of Chocolate Hills in Sagbayan, Bohol.
Aside from the Chocolate Hills, tourist are also presented with other destinations worthy for a tourist to visit. This includes the sanctuary for tarsiers, a small primate found in Bohol and the famous Loboc River.
My last visit to Bohol and its Chocolate Hills was in 2004. Now that I'm writing about it because of its inclusion to the top list of New Seven World Wonders of Nature, I think I'll plan a trip to see it again. Who knows, I might just see you there.
