Sagada, The Holy Place

By ProTraveler at 03/16/08 19:20

In the Cordillera Region of the Philippines, there is one place that is being visited by thousands of people every year especially when times like this is approaching, holy week. The place is called Sagada. It is one of the ten towns of Mountain Province.

The main source of income in Sagada is agriculture. About 90% of its topography is best for farming. The locals of Sagada are called Igorots and their langhuage is called Kankana-ey. Most of the people use English instead of Tagalog, the national language, when communicating with people from different places. It is one of the reasons why their tourism is flourishing.

But aside from the breath taking sceneries, warm people, English speaking citizens, Sagada is also famous for being the Holy Land. Sagada used to be the burial grounds of Datu and Sultans of ancient tribes wherein they were mummified and then buried inside the caves on the mountainous planes of Sagada.

A lot of people said being in Sagada results in a very calm state. You will experience the ultimate peace and relaxation. They said the air in Sagada has an effect of clearing your problems and lifting your soul closer to God. That is the main reason why people are gathering in Sagada especially arount this time of the year. There are also festivals and processions done during the Holy Week called Parada ng Santo or Parade of Saints in English. Many locals and even foreigners participate in this festivals. It is believed that if you complete the course of the festival's route, you can make a wish that will be granted within a year.

Televisions news reported that even though Holy Week is still a few days from now, the hotels and inns in the place were all fully booked.
