Discovering Cebu

By Gill Bautista at 05/04/08 22:53
, destinations: The Taoist Temple of Cebu, Cebu: Cebu At Night

Cebu is one of the richest provinces in the Philippines. Its capital is Cebu City but the term Metro Cebu is mostly used denoting other nearby cities as well. It is considered as the second most important city in the country mainly due to its economic importance. In the recent years, massive improvement happened in Cebu that changed its economic direction to what it is now, rich.

Almost 80% of the sea vessels are made and are based in Cebu. Also, 80% of these ships are Filipino owned. There are two business parks in Cebu that homes hundreds of big companies from both local and foreign investors. Because of its importance, it is usually called as the Queen City of the South. The province can actually withstand by itself. It has its own power plants, an airport and a good number of sea ports. Hotels and resorts are also a big attraction to Cebu. The Waterfront Hotel is the flagship hotel of the province. I have stayed there for many times and I can say that their service is really great. Each customer is given their own butlers, making you feel like a royalty. The Hilton Hotel in Mactan, Cebu is also one of the best. The photo above, with the view of Cebu at night is actually taken atop the Hilton Hotel.

Tourist destinations are also prominent in Cebu. The other photo is taken from the Taoist Temple of Cebu. It is located in a very wealthy district of Cebu, the Beverly Hills which was sponsored by the Chinese Community and was complete in 1972. I have been there when I was still a kid and I hardly remember anything about it. But I looked at the old pictures a while ago and I really can say it was a beauty. That particular photo is taken by a good friend.

Cebu is also the melting pot of Visayas because of the large number of foreign residents. Expats in the province comprises around 3% to 5% of the population in 2005 and now it increased to 10%.

As what Korean visitors usually said, "Philippines is synonymous to Cebu. No Cebu, no Philippines." Lol haha. And have I told you that they are the invaders of Cebu? One time I was on a plane for Mactan. I was the only Filipino and the 98 other passengers are Koreans ha ha.
