Marikina - Shoe Capital of the Philippines

There is one city in the Philippines that is completely lived by making shoes. It is their primary industry, and they are they are the biggest exporter of it to other countries. There are some shoes factories elsewhere, most notably in Cebu, but nothing beat Marikina's passion for making shoes.

Marikina used to be a a town in the Rizal province. It But its economy quickly risen and it became a highly urbanized municipality and eventually converted into a first class city. Watch this short video anchored by foreigners who has observed the Filipinos' obsession for shoes.

Marikina lies in the middle of Quezon City, Pasig City and the town of Cainta in Rizal. Its great location, is also a key point why their products can easily reach the markets and stores.

In September 2006, I witness what was the newest festival I know, the Sapatos Festival (shoe festival). This year, they moved the festival on October. And I am sure to attend this one.
