The Whale Sharks Of Donsol

By Holy Cow at 04/19/08 05:56

, animals: Whale Shark In Donsol, Sorsogon, Philippines
The whale sharks, with its reputation of being the biggest fish in the world, is a very popular character in the underwater world.

A lot of people would die just to see one, a lot will do anything just to have a moment swimming with this animals. And I am proud to say that I have done this, many times.

Philippines has a wide variety of marine creatures. Being the country with the highest concentration of marine biodiversity in the world, its no surprise to learn that these whale sharks can be seen in the Philippine waters more than in any other locations in the world.

Donsol in the province of Sorsogon is the haven for these enormous sea goddess. The whale sharks, despite of their size, its a gentle giant. They do now harm humans and its very much safe to swim alongside these lovely huge fish.

The whale sharks are always on a world tour. They roam around the world but never forgets to visit the country every February to May. Donsol being the host usually. But they are also spotted in parts of Batangas and Mindoro, primarily when they come or go away to migrate to some warmer waters. They are thought to be pelagic or stayed only on water spots where continents and bodies of land are far but when in Donsol, they enjoy being with the visitors.

A normal trip to Donsol will cost you less than 5 thousand pesos. A chance to swim with them will need additional 2 thousand for the diving gears and the short lessons. So cheap for a once in a lifetime experience.

So come on now while they are still here. They will venture in the middle of the Pacific or go somewhere harder to find when June comes. Grab the opportunity now.

The Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity: The Philippine Islands.

By Holy Cow at 04/19/08 05:17
Philippines is the most beautifully shaped archipelago in the world. If you will look at it on the map, the whole country is bordered by great bodies of water.

The country is rich in marine life. In 2006, the Philippines was given the title "The Center of the World In Marine Diversity" according to a study conducted by Kent Carpenter, Old Dominion University associate professor of biological sciences in Virginia, USA. While in 2007, Philippines was awarded the center of the center of marine bio-diversity and the world's highest concentration of marine life by America's Smithsonian Institute specifically in the Verdes Islands.

The Verdes Island is now put to security when the government announced that it is now a protected marine sanctuary as part of its way to conserve the site. It is known that the Verdes Straight is a busy sea highway where sea vessels venture everyday from Batangas to Mindoro to reach Puerto Galera. Now it was re-routed to avoid the deterioration of the marine spot.

Also, one of the pride of the country is the Tubbataha Reeef located in Southern Mindanao.

Tubbataha has been declared a National Marine Parkand a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is now a contender on the ongoing voting for the New Seven Wonders Of The World.

Philippines is indeed a diver's paradise.
