In a few days we'll be turning our calendars for the coming of May. A lot of people are waiting for this month because it is undeniably the liveliest month of the year. May is named as the Philippine's month of festivals. It is the month where the highest number of festivals are being held. Every year, there is an intra-country tourism cultural program called Filipino Heritage Festival. This is a month long festival that celebrates the country's heritage, both tangible and not. The festival is held in all part of the country and each venue used for the Festival is a landmark commemorating the history of the country. This lasts for the whole month of May.
The festival is run by the following objectives.
- To raise the consciousness of the average Filipino of the existence of these marvelous man-made as well as natural landmarks and the need to cherish and preserve them.
- To institutionalize and foster the month of May as the National Heritage Month.
- To animate and focus attention on Filipino Cultural Heritage through various cultural events that will encompass, address and include the different tiers of the society.
- To act as a unifying force in the society through the use of heritage.
Also, May is known as the Flower Month because this is the month where the highest number of flowers bloomed. There is also a festival called Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) that is held in a number of towns around the country. The Pahiyas Festival in Quezon is also held every May, and is considered as the grandest festival in the country. Iloilo's Panagat Festival is also around the corner every May. It is dubbed by many as the ultimate FISH-tival because it is the festival given to the patron saint of fishermen for thankfulness and hopes of having better harvest year after year.
