SONA 2008 - Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

By ProTraveler at 07/24/08 19:09

On Monday, July 28, the president of the Republic of the Philippines will be holding her annual State of the Nation Address [SONA] for the year 2008. It is highly anticipated by many as especially for organizations opposing the government and sees it as another one of the president's "lies".

If the President's SONA 2007 contains all about the super regions and preparing the country to become a first world country by the year 2020, the SONA 2008 will focus on the government's achievements in solving different national crisis that struck the country for the last months and its plan to counter the coming ones. She will be mainly focusing for the National Social Welfare program that is ease the effects of global crisis.

The president also aims to further discuss the issues of family planning and future building for the young Filipinos. Secretary Cerge Remonde, also the head of the Presidential Management Staff, said the president will also be stating policy statements and of course, politics.

The issue of disabling or reducing the Value Added Tax or VAT during these hard times was not made clear by the secretary if this will be included in the president's annual statement.

Though not to be taken seriously, surveys conducted in different parts of the country shows more disbelief of Arroyo's statement as compared to last year's. The biggest number of non-believers to what Arroyo's statement will be came mostly from parts of Mindanao, a part of the country that has a lot of potential but is least developed and focused by the government.

Malacañang proudly said the president will be using the speech they prepared that took them four months to complete and she has been rehearsing it for the last four weeks. I don't know what's to be proud about that, but sure, nice effort to make it sound perfect.

People close to the president however said and appealed to Arroyo's critics to listen to the SONA first before shooting it down. The SONA hype attracted rallies and demonstrations across the country every year and I'm pretty sure this year will not be different from the past, aside from having less food rations for the rallyists due to the high price of nearly EVERYTHING.

This is an English blog about the Philippines and comments should also be in English. Thanks.

hmm...i think her SONA gives us benefit in some ways but i think lies were still at her words...she's not of a good president...the hell i care of what she said whether it benefited me or not but the only thing i'm ahead of her is a good leadership that is not full of lies but rather full of actions...
I think in her SONA shes trying to fool Filipino people regarding her achievement in addressing those people involve in achivement niya ""kuno"" . But Filipinos are not fool to believe on her strategy. On the other hand she tried to defend VAT because, in her opinion this will help Filipino people but the truth is VAT is the big source of her personal income. How come she will tell Filipino people that VAT help them since VAT is the primary reason why all of the food and commodities prices are becoming high instead of paying 2000 pesos for the food you buy the poor people like me will pay 2240 pesos. So I would recommend that she should go back to elementary and learn computations. Instead of paying 1000 pesos for our electric bill we are paying 1120 pesos. I rated her as ecxellent ""LIER""

To WILBUR:

Funny. An English blog about the Philippines. As if Americans cared, and half of the Filipino population understand English.

Well, PGMA SONA has been done in good ways, ellaborate what she did for the last few months, and again some promises in the future. How ever as I watched on tv, if everybody may or maynot notice the background or shadows,so many high 'Politicians' who are just sitting, listening and claping their hands.

Are all of them really helping our Government, or they are just sitting and waiting 'HAPPY' for their SALARY? VATs and EVATs (value added tax for salary, extra value added tax for salary) coming from us OFWs and the poor people.

'PGMA' was a 'PROFFESSIONAL BEGGAR', begging international abroad, what a shame.......

I would like to say that instead of criticizing the President, why not help her in her advocacies? In this way we will be able to achieve whatever we want to achieve. I am not really a pro, but I am also not blind with the great things she have done to at least ease the poverty this country is feeling. Her strategies somehow have made great things and have done great things.

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is one of the great Presidents I've known next to Marcos. I am pleased with the things that she have done, though I am also disappointed with certain things. But then again, we should not discredit her efforts in making Filipino lives better. It is not easy to be a leader, especially to manage the whole country, facing a lot of tribulations not only nationwide but worldwide as well.

To the comments given by the former Presidents: Fidel V Ramos and Joseph E. Estrada. I would say that you should somehow understand what the President is experiencing. You have been on that stage also. To FVR yes you have somehow the right to talk, because you are also one great President in history. BUT to ERAP, you shut up, because a plunder case CONVICT like you, has no credibility in tackling things regarding the government. You should not talk about what is right and such, because in the first place you are the exact example of how NOT TO BECOME A LEADER! You stained the sacredness of public service! Mahiya ka naman!

To everyone, lets join hands, for the future of this country. For the Victory of our battle!

Kudos Filipinos!

Sometimes we FILIPINO's are very close minded that we didn't even try to look on the other side of what has been made by the Government in achieving and providing better life for the poeple of this country thru the Leadership of her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. As an individual, I say that It's not the fault of the President if the Price on FUEL and RICE in the WORLD MARKET increases. do not only critic one person, why not try to look at your Barangay Chairman? your Mayor? your Congressman? your Governor? and the Senator that you voted? are they also perfect? are you also sure that they do not COrrupt? let us try to bend our five senses and be more responsible. let us not fight against the government rather support them to be able to provide the basic services and quality of life to us all...

A FAIRYTALE WILL ALWAYS BE A FAIRYTALE AND GLORIA'S SONA 2008 IS ANOTHER STORY FORM HER BOOK OF LIES AND GIBE, WHY DON'T SHE TRY TO LIVE LIKE THE POOR PEOPLE SO SHE CAN UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF POVERTY.
i'm just wondering why are there so many critizicing what our presidwent has stated... but i also admit that yes they are true comments for they are rampantly observed in our country proven by our people's suffering. as a teenager, i experinced sufferings in many ways which means the philippines is really under crisis, she mentioed on her sona yesterday about the global crisis but has not done something to ease the sufferings of the filipinos.
Comment #13 Merry April Dioso at 07/29/08 01:00
VAT can help people who are vulnerable in times of calamities, as our president told us in her State of the Nation Address... But who are the ones having taxis? Rich and poor...

So then poor people need those amount to but something for their lives, as needed, instead of paying taxis....

We have to make a move now, for we are all affected.

Leading is hard to do so we need to cooperate, But the big question is "HOW"?

GOD BLESS.

Comment #14 llewellyn ns lanie at 07/29/08 01:40
in fairness to the gov't. there have been several infrastructure that has been built because of the vat.

If we criticize presidents that they have done bad things that won't lead us to anything, instead we should say it properly because maybe she is trying her best but cannot because she was discouraged about the criticism of the people. You think first before you say anything because it is not really easy to be a leader and I am saying this because I have tried being a leader of our R.T (responsible team)in HSS(Holy Spirit School)and i tell you it is very hard. Everyday I would manage all the activities we would do. I was trying my best because they all depend on me but there were times when I failed and guess what did the members said they criticized me and that lead me to discouragement. But yes there were times that the president had done bad things but let us not criticize in telling what we are thinking but instead do the right thing. It is your decision but for me forgive others as you want to be forgiven....... Think first before you say anything........Because have you tried doing bad to somebody? Did they criticized you? If yes what did you feel?: If no what did you feel? Let us give chances OK because I believe all people has a tendency to change their bad attitudes to good attitudes "diba". Reflect this questions..... BBBYYYEEEE!!! I hoped you learned anything.
Comment #25 sem. efren diaz at 07/29/08 08:31
hmmm... i dont like to give some critics about her sona... however, I just like to give some advice to her through proverbs that says, "promZ is nothing untill it is fuLfiL.." and maybe, she must be a president of action not a president of words... and additional for her "greatest propaganda is not a million of words, but a hundreds only of actions..." Filipino is not a man of words but a man of action....thank you,,,
Comment #26 marian at 07/29/08 09:00

i think everyone should understand the state of our country today. we should not olweiz criticize anyone's idea. dahil lhat nmn tayong pilipino ay nahihirapan sa mga nangyayari. for our president, sana nmn matupad ang mga cnasbi mo upang hindi na magkaganto ang mga pilipino
Comment #29 Lee at 07/29/08 10:04
The President's delivery of the SONA was very persuasive..

The contents were clear but it didn't really show the real state of our country's economy. It only showed accomplishments of the government but no failures were mentioned. The evidences of econ. growth being felt were only individuals and not group of persons. It's useless if only one out of many Filipinos is able to feel the progress/growth.

About the President's sincerity...hmm.. I think she's sincere about what he said though I doubt that all her plans would be accomplished.

VAT and Food crisis were really emphasized and education was not given too much importance. Hey, I'm a student ya know! I thought " Kabataan ang Pag-asa ng Bayan " ? O, now this saying is not true anymore huh?

What could the public students do with 10 pesos anyway?

Funds for a more stringent Anti-Graft Act? How I wish the fund would really be used for Anti-graft and corruption procedures and not go straight to the pocket of those dirty officials.(>.<)

GMA is doing her best to correct her mistakes. Give her another chance. Lee is right. It's the other politicians who are corrupt who should be blamed. If there are no corrupt officials, maybe PGMA would somehow reduce our VAT.

its not gloria’s fault! It is the people who wants to corrupt the money that gloria has given for poor people, it should be for the filipinos that needed the money, but they put it in their pocket!… gloria always try to do her best to fulfill her promises!…and she always try to do her best to help the Philippines to have a good economy!…
Comment #35 franX089 at 07/29/08 22:56
We humans are indeed not ignorant and naive anymore. In ourselves we know that the President is working really hard but the problem is some people who work for her are not as conscientious, dedicated and loyal to our country. Working with non-conformity is fine as long as you can achieve what should achieve. Let us support her programs for as far as I am concern compared to Aquino, Ramos and Estrada, she is far better president than them.

Our president cannot do everything so we have to work with her and not be a hindrance towards the success of her programs.

i think president arroyo she had no right to say anything because the only solution in the global crisis is the vat itself, she should do her part as president but not by merely uttering foolish words.as elements of filipino philosophy, deeds of persons are the key factors in knowing them, deeds express the inner person and the real itself.as a challenge to us, we should response our part also in this global crisis in the philippines.

hmmm... I really like of what she said during her SONA that says, "we are 3 branches but 1 goverment, we have disagreements, but we are 1 nation with one fate..." i don't know if this is really true? maybe for me, it is better for her to say, "one goverment in corruption and one fate to corrupt...hehehehehe... sorry madam president of saying this... moreover she said also, that the very reason of "poverty is the number of people..." how about the graft and corruption, this is not a very big reason? madam look and obsrve first of what is really happening around us, and after that's the time for you to say like that... maybe, for you madam, do your part since still the turn is with you, and maybe God also will do his part after your life in this world...God bless you and goodluck....
hahayzz. i dont know if GMA is lying or not.. i can say that there is no improvement in our country.. there is no change in our economy.. how about our market and gasoline price?? is there's any change?? how can GMA solve this solution??
ms.president VAT is important to businessmans but if the Vat is increasing people who are always buying will complain and they will avoid buying things but VAT could be participated but decrease its percent
Comment #44 Lee at 07/30/08 06:48
Economics - It's not easy as you think so don't judge the president.

Pres. Arroyo's NOT the only person running the government. Do you still remember that the government has 3 branches? geez. I say, she's NOT lying.

VAT - Just consider this one as donation to the poor. When you remove this, the gap between the rich and the poor would increase. - opportunity cost

Walang hiya.

Comment #79 Dr. Labatiba at 08/02/08 20:33

you know guys... every individual who had posted their comments here have their own different opinion, so better lay off and just focus on your own perspective about SONA, anyway this comment would just be read and agreed on and some would be just crap depending on the reader per'se, let's just be optimistic, hope for the best and do something to achieve it. Stop bragging about everything, we all know that everyone is dreaming for the betterment of this country, so it is much better if we would be united in achieving this goal.

Erap: "Or not na lang."

Comment #95 Pobreng Alindahaw at 08/04/08 09:22

For us Filipinos, in order to help our country develop and progress, I think it is better for us to search ourselves if we really are helping our government in upholding the well-being of the majority in some little ways. I think, most if not all, just criticize, oppose and reject the President's plan for the country, instead of supporting her and instead of becoming optimistic about her goals.

Why? Just try to ask ourselves: Have we cared of tucking in our little garbage in our bag instead of throwing it anywhere?Have we given time to pick up a small trash on the sidewalk? Have we dared following traffic rules without the traffic enforcers' presence? There are too many minute things that require our honesty, our integrity and our obedience, yet, only few try to act that way faithfully. This is really a saddening fact that we, somehow can't discipline ourselves. If we do discipline ourselves, I think the president don't have much hard time handling us and running our country.

JUst try to figure it out, one woman leading us. It's not too easy for one person to manage millions of people. IF parents find it hard to rear and discipline a chid, how much more handling everyone nationwide?

In my opinion, we should imprint in our minds this famous line of one of the American presidents, "Do not ask what your country can do for you,but ask what you can do for your country."

This is only my Reaction About The SONA..",)

There were various reactions that arise with regards to the SONA speech of Pres.Arroyo last week. Even until now, politicians and ordinary citizens alike had aired their views on the outcome of the speech. Some says it is just a “fairy tale” or an act of the administration to be still in power since the upcoming election is fast approaching. Other says it is a start of a much better administration if PGMA will really uphold to what she says in her speech or if realization of her speech will be well implemented.

To my opinion, if PGMA will really implement every detail of her speech, then well and good. It is what we are looking for right now….to prospers not only in the years to come but as well as the now. But I am not saying that I am embracing all of the highlights of her speech. There are some items that I think is not for the best of our country. Firstly, I think what PGMA has to strongly emphasize is the strong implementation of the anti-graft and corruption. This is what she has first to do---because I think corruption is the main reason why our country today suffers a lot. If this will be well imposed then everything will just follow through---poverty line will be eliminated and the poor will be alleviated, there will be less unemployment and price hike of goods and commodities will be if not eliminated at least lessen its burden to our society. Secondly, with regards to text cost cut by 50 cents….I appreciate this move of PGMA since communication now a days is not only a necessity but a way of life of the people. If PGMA says “texting is a way of life”… why only have it 50 cents per text for three months? Why not make it a law to have it for the rest of the communication life since development of the country depends also on this. I think a large percentage of the people are using this type of communication. So even if telecommunication centers will lower its cost, still they will not be in bad shape because percentage of the users will get high. Thirdly, I think if we cannot eliminate the VAT issue, then at least the government should lower its percentage rate so that price hike for commodities will be lowered down. With this, I think poverty line will be lessened. Fourthly, the government should focus more to improve the richness that we have. Like the agrarian land… if we have much of this land, why now we have rice crisis. This should also be the focused of the PGMA administration. In her speech, she said that she had talked with Land Bank to quadrupled the loans of the farmers and the fisherfolk. If this is the case, well and good. But I think also it should be well emphasized that the interest of the loanable amount will not become the burden to these people. And that the PGMA administration should really give the P4 billion promised amount to the rice self-sufficiency program. But whatever program the government will have, nobody really knows what will become of our country. SONA or no SONA, our country….its progress relies on us …the people… If only we have what we call “UNITY”.

HAve a Nice Day!!
