I'm still a university sophomore and although I need two more years to complete the whole course and have myself a diploma before finding a decent job that will suit my degree, I already have an offer to work for their company as soon as I am done with school.
Well, it was my aunt's company. She wants me to work for her Metro Manila office and soon become head of the branch. It was alright, but it's something I actually don't look forward to be doiing. I'm not the type who wants to work with relatives just to get ahead of others or be able to get a good position instantly.
It was a nice offer, alright. But my two other brothers can do that for me, as I don't see myself getting confined in the four corners of an office. I know I can do more outside, where I can hone my skills and practice more on what life has to offer outside the office buildings. 'guess I got this attitude from someone I really look up to.
Like this someone I admire, I'm also into putting investments for longer goals than working almost half of the day and going in and out of the office five or six times a week. There's more to life aside from facing your office walls.
But the dream of working in one of Metro Manila's huge offices came to me once. It was during high school when the BPO industry industry was highlighted in a careers day program. The speakers said that there's no need to fly abroad to search for greener pastures, you don't even need to get to college to be successful. All you have to do is work in one of these telemarketing companies.
They made it sound like it's the answer to the questions of money and security for the family. They made it sound like once you graduated from high school and made it passed one of these call centers, you don't have to continue going to college. I blame this aggressive industry promotion for the low number of college enrollees ever since.
It is true that getting a degree doesn't guarantee your success, but to tell people not to dream of getting educated in universities because work and money is handy in these jobs after high school is lame. Just lame. Back in the days, a degree is not very important, but in this world we are now in, a degree is your ticket to your dreamland.
