The rainy month of May is an indication that summer is indeed over. With the cool wind replacing the hot breeze, you definitely have to wear your jackets rather than your bathing suits. However, May is also an introduction to the forthcoming festivals and other Philippine celebrations. May itself is full of grandiosities and the following months is an equal piece as well, maybe more than.
This month we celebrate the grand festival of San Isidro in Lucban, Quezon with their ever colorful Pahiyas Festival. It actually have started last May 15 and will end tomorrow. Though the Pahiyas Festival 2008 is not as colorful as what it is during the past years because of the bad weather, it is a must to pay Lucban a visit.
May is also considered in the Philippines as the second Women's Month, March being the first. It is more likely in accordance with the Mother's Day celebration. Thus, May is also dubbed as the Mother's Month. It's this time of the year where nationwide shopping mall sales and other Motherly activities are held. Talk about family budgeting here. There are also events like SM Prime Holding's Mother's Dating Service where your moms have a chance to win a One Million Peso Date with your father (or if in any case he is already dead, your mom can choose who she wants to date with the options of our local celebrities). It may sound weird but that is actually a very successful event held every year.
Another celebration that Filipinos are happy about is the country's celebration of the Philippine Heritage Month. This is the month for those who wants to learn more about the Filipino culture and its heritages. Every museums in the country are decorated with every bit of our being a Filipino from art stuffs, to local pride-products, to beauty pageants for the world renowned Filipina beauties. I mentioned it is one of the many celebrations that makes the Filipino people happy because, the Heritage Month means a lot of food. Filipinos love to eat, we all love to eat, but this is something special. It's the time where every restaurant in the country are putting their specialty cuisines to prices everyone can afford. Like those caviars and rosemary Chickens? You can have them in $5-$10.
We are already half-way May, and still more surprises are yet to come!
