Last time I promised to show you some of the photos from my trip to the Pahimis Festival up to the beach tripping in the town of Ternate, Cavite. Its time for the Corregidor, Bataan excursion.
The Island of Corregidor is a big rock offshore the mainland province of Bataan, both are seen and can be reach from Ternate, Cavite in just a 30 minute boat ride.
Corregidor is one of the most important part of the World War II history of the country. The Japanese invaded almost all part of the country except for Bataan, where the main of the US Military is located. But being outnumbered, the US military were forced to give up Bataan. From Bataan, there is an underground water tunnel that will lead you to the Rock of Corregidor. It will take you 20 minutes before you reach the rock. Risky. Gen. Douglas McArthur took that risk and went into the tunnel to reach the rock where the last Military front is located and the boat that will take him to Australia. His famous words are "I shall return". He came back after a year and reclaimed the Philippines from the Japanese. Its so famous that it was used in many movies.
Nothing much has changed in the Rock of Corregidor since my last visit here about 5 years ago. Actually the site is still almost the same 5 decades ago. It was successfully preserved and now one of the greatest attraction and historical landmark of the country.
According to surveys, 80% tourist that arrived in Manila International Airport or the Ninoy Aquino International Airport visit Corregidor first before they go to their original destination. It is because of its accessibility for transport. From Manila, there is a port where it will take you directly to the Rock in just 40 minutes en route Manila Bay.
So next time you visit Philippines, be sure to have a taste of the history and pay a visit to the Rock of Corregidor.
