State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2009 Review - Full Text / Transcript Download

Just a few hours ago, Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President of the Republic of the Philippines, delivered her much awaited speech, the annual State of the Nation Address for the year 2009. Politicians, businessmen, students - all took part in the president's speech in their televisions, in the streets and inside the Batasang Pambansa.

Because this is Macapagal-Arroyo's last SONA, she basically summarized and highlighted her almost a decade of presidency. The SONA 2009 lasted almost an hour and a usual, is graced by the number of claps from the audience inside the Batasang Pambansa everytime she states good things. While she is receiving claps of appreciation inside the building, protesters / rallyist outside are screaming their utmost disgust for the lady president.

In the first part of the president's speech, she made her audience laugh when she said "A few days ago, Moody’s has just announced the upgrade of our credit rating, citing the resilience of our economy. The state of our nation is a strong economy. Good news for our people, bad news for our critics...". She also added that she "I did not become President to be popular. To work, to lead, to protect and preserve our country, our people, that is why I became President."

She boasted of her achievements such as an increased revenue in the BPO industry, increased in tourism that is now a $5 billion industry, the almost 700,000 indigenous people that got benefited in the CARP land reform, the passing of the Cheaper Medicines Law, Rent Control, EPIRA Law, Bio-Fuels Act, Renewable Energy Act and a lot of others.

The president also tackled the things that must be given tax. She said that books must not be given tax, instead, put tax on tobacco and alcohol. She showed how concern she is when it comes to education and the teaching profession. "Pardon my partiality for the teaching profession. I was a teacher...."

Also, the president listed down 5 things that her regime achieved:

1. We have a strong economy in a strong fiscal position to withstand political shocks....
2. We built new modern infrastructure and completed unfinished ones.
3. The economy is more fair to the poor than ever before....
4. We are building a sound base for the next generation....
5. International authorities have taken notice that we are safer from environmental degradation and
man-made disasters....

I only hope Pres. GMA the best when she leaves the office. She's been a good leader, unfortunately her deeds go unnoticed most of the time.

Some critic said hindi maganda and sinabing iyon ni GMA na parang nanghahamon,,,for me its ok,at least for the last time in her sona naipapalabas nya lahat ng gusto nyang sabihi.

Im still proud of our president,if we want changes and progress in our country start it in ourself. Its in our hand the success of our country.

di nya pinasalamatan si sen mar roxas na author ng cheaper medicine law. unfair naman yun. nagmura si mar roxas nung dec 2008 sa isang anti cha-cha protest pero he was not really addressing it to our president. remember ang pagkakasabi nya "p*tang *na ano ba to"? tapos nagpasintabi rin naman agad. kung talagang umunlad ang Pilipinas sa ilalim ng pamamalakad nya bakit hindi ito nararamdaman ng ordinaryong pilipino??

yung mga bilihin lalong tumaas nung anjan sya halimbawa na lang yung presyo ng LPG/11kg na nasa 150-200 pesos lang noon ngayon nasa 500-600 na ngayon. pano yan? na saan ang pagunlad na sinasabi nya???

i think our PGMA is a good leader, sometimes it is just us who makes her a bad leader, it is just us who makes her run this country bad...

we just need cooperation to each other, if something wrong is happening, there..you need to say NO..

Ayos lang sa akin pero ang bayan naiinis kasi sa pangulo daw wala pang natupad sa nakaraang sona.I dont know, pero parang nagloloko lang siya.kaya naman dapat lang na tuparin niya itong mga pangako niya para sa bayan natin.

I wondered how she can boast to the top of it all yet seem to forget about her scams. Also, if Philippines was getting better during those times, how come commodity prices keep rising?

Also, have you read "between the lines"? Our professor mentioned this to us that SONA is supposed to tell the State/Condition of the nation, and no more. But it seems like Gloria is using it to answer back at her critics, even giving out overtones like

"To those who want to be President, this advice..blah blah..Don't say bad words in public." or "Those who live in glass houses should cast no stones. Those who should be in jail should not threaten

it, especially if they have been there...."

the former refers to roxas and the latter statement to another guy who was imprisoned by gloria for something (in truth, she just wants that guy out of the scene).

It's the first time I read your blog.... All I can say is, whatever she accomplished, let it be. Critics are just scapegoating... We are the government--- there's no blaming here. Kung sino perpekto, siya na lamang ang magpresidente...

Humahanga ako sa kakayahan ni PGMA,matalino siya iyon ang obserbasyon ko ngunit nasobrahan yata siya sa talino at umabot na sa puntong ayaw niyang bumaba sa puwesto at naglabas ng CHACHA. Paano na tayong mga Pilipino kung ganitong mga uri ng pulitiko ang mamamahala sa ating bansa, kawawa ang mga taong-bayan sila ang pangunahing apektado sa mga pangyayaring ito. Ang sona na ito, marahil ang iba ay totoo maaari din hindi at pawang kasinungalingan lamang. Magising na sana sa katotohanan ang pangulo na ang kailangan ng ating bansa ay isang lider na may puso para sa mga nasasakupan niya.

we all know gloria is a wise person.she used her intellectual mind to control things here in our country.but because of here power towards on our country she manipulated some people and discriminate those people who are against on her.yet, people still have the courage to fight for their rights. ipinapakita lng ni gloria na guilty xa sa mga gmgawa nyang mali.kahit ngkasala na xa sa taong-bayan may gana pa xang manitili sa knyang posisyon!!
