One of the most coveted and most sought after event in the Philippines would be the annual World Pyro Olympics.
The World Pyro Olympics is the second most prestigious fireworks festival in the world, next to Montreal Fireworks Festival. Though the event is supposed to be held in different venues every year, the Philippines played host to the event for the past three years, since it's establishment in 2005. In 2005, (no event in 2006) 2007 and 2008, all are hosted by the Philippines, the reason why a big spot in Pasay City facing the Manila Bay was already allocated for the event.
In the past Pyro Olympics, the event is held for 5 consecutive days, wherein two countries will compete for a day and the others will compete the day day, and the remaining countries will show their might on the finals night before the announcement of the winners.
In 2005, Australia bagged the title as the World Champion, beating 10 other countries. In 2007, the United Kingdom emerged as the champion beating other participants from Australia, Poland, United States, Spain, Germany, Canada, Denmark, China and the Philippines. Fort the past two events, the Philippines concludes the night with their fireworks presentation entitled 'Fellowship of Fire'.
This year, the scheduling was changed. There are only 7 participants and every Saturday of the month of May, 2 countries will showcased their enchanting fireworks. Participants include Germany, China, Canada, France, Venezuela, Italy and the Philippines. Last Saturday, I was able to witness the presentation of Team Venezuela and Team Italy. Both have great fireworks. I feel like it's New Year! The fireworks lighted the night skies and it glows vibrantly every time the lights explode in the air. Italy in particular showed fireworks that denotes their culture. Their have effects like pastas lining the sky, and something they called 'Macaroni Light', a combination of small but many lights that look pretty much, well, like macaronis.
The Philippines will be presenting this coming Saturday. This year, they changed their theme to Pyromusical Rhythm. Of course, I will go. See you on Saturday! :)
