Rally Point

By ProTraveler at 03/05/08 05:18

Recently, more than 100,000 Filipinos and foreigners marched in the streets of Makati, the country's financial district, to send their reclaims and plea for the resignation of the current president, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

This event happened due to the issues wherein the first family got involved in an alleged dirty dealing with China, in their ZTE Broadband Project.

The government denied anomalies in the dealings but confirmed that they had to continue the deal even though these protests are happening because they had to protect the relation between the two countries. China is one of the fifth largest investor in the country and one of the biggest supporter of the Philippines when it comes to international trading.

The Chinese community in the Philippines, however, are not alarmed of this issue. Although the Chinese market in the country is affected badly. Their sales went down to 20% for the past few weeks because some of the locals here are boycotting them.

The government called an appeal to the public that hat is happening now is a government to government issue and not the races, so they must not target the small individuals from China who are here in the country for business. Chinese in the Philippines has created a name for being the medium for business for the past few decades and they actually built a community in the metro called Ongpin or Chinatown. It is considered as the center of low priced goods imported from China.

Prior to this issue, the government also recalled some products from China for being suspected o containing deadly lead materials. The issue is still ongoing while rally and street protest are still moving along the major roads of the metros.
